Evaluation
This project was a very new path for me and my work, and I believe that I have handled making an interactive experience for the viewer quite well. I have engaged actively in workshops, but haven’t made it to many studio days. The one element that I believe may have lacked however, is researching outside sources through the course of the module.
The first research into artist books gave me a good grasp on some examples of artists' books, but I should have opened my research field larger in order to gather an idea of just how many forms they can take. My outside research into illustration and artist works almost completely dropped off after this first set of research, and while it very may well have been beneficial to continue it throughout, I did not want to accidentally influence myself from moving away from the canon designs of Accord's possessions. However, I believe my research in gathering knowledge of Accord's character, accurate Nier history & content, and general sleuthing I had to do was quite resourceful, as in some cases the information was not readily available and I had to gather it from the primary source.
In terms of time planning and scope of the project, I have improved remarkably! Setting a tiered structure to my tasks and categorising them into necessary and unnecessary allowed me to jump from tasks to keep my motivation for the project up whilst still being productive. This is the only project where I have felt consistently engaged and joyful throughout the entirety of the project. I have also challenged myself to move completely out of my comfort zone of 2D digital works to make various 3D interactive aspects, a new area of illustration I had no interest or even researched into before this project.
As for execution, I think I have done the best I can with such a new area of creative work. I have utilised various methods (book binding, upcycling, thrifting, shape/size hierarchy, leather work) to create an immersive and interactive experience that is as much of an embodiment of the character Accord as possible.
