The Brief and Research
The Brief
Module Brief - Narrative and Sequence
The Artists' book
During the module you will develop a varied visual language for the making of a final artefact that explores and utilises the properties of "the book* by experimenting with processes and materials in relation to images in the broadest sense.
From your initial and on-going research, drawings and images will be made using a variety of media.
These will be translated into a 'book' or narrative construct by means of experimenting and sampling a range of appropriate techniques.
You will be asked to produce a finished collection of images (book) that is an evocation of your ideas in either 2D or 3D. The form that your finished work will take will be determined by your personal responses to your negotiated subject matter. Tutorials, lectures, workshops and group seminars will form the basis for this module.
Assessment Deadline: Thursday 16 March @ 10am in 1F9
The module is underpinned by an emphasis on the development of a personal visual language both at the research, development and realisation stages of the module. Students are initially encouraged to use amongst others, drawing as the primary means of information gathering although this may be extended to include other media such as digital photography, film footage, sound recording, rubbings, found ephemera, samples, other evidence or written annotated observations. The choice of subject matter is critical to the success of the project, and must be carefully considered before embarking on the task.
Materials to be submitted for Assessment:
1. A final piece of work, responding to and exploring the concept and characteristics of the Artists'book as a means of visual communication.
2. Supporting work - including a selection of the following: sketchbooks, prototypes, maquettes, print and production testers.
3. An animated GIF from the GIF workshop.
4. The Zine workshop (final artwork and roughs).
5. The bookbinding workshop.
6. A short evaluative statement (max 500 words).
In Essence…
We have to create an experiance that moves the viewer through a sequence/series of ideas/concepts. This experiance must be physical and include great considoration towards the viewers haptic senses as well as fitting in and making sense with what the experiance is actually based upon.
Research
For this first little bit- seeing as I am new to the concept of artists books described in our lectures, I have decided to take a broad look at various examples.
Alix Swan - Dust Jacket Books
Small renditions of various fairytales throughout history, Swan creates miniture books connected with older making techniques, determined to keep the joy of these mediums alive.

Mat Osmond
Taking the much more familliar form of a traditional book, Mat Osmands Drawing on Sand, Drawing on Water (2014) is rooted with the memories of the artists walks around the Falmouth coast.

Claire Kennedy
Kennedys work focusses more on treating the ‘book’ as a sculptural object, whilst ensuring that its general tradional imagry/content stays relativly recognisable.

Jan Alison Edwards
Jan Alison Edwards vairous artists books explore the relationship between humans and nature. While that topic itself is not one I wish to explore, Edwards places a large amount of emphasis and thought into the papers that form their books. Making the papers by hand using materials relevant to the project. A interesting process that personally I have wanted to try for a while.

Larissa Cox
Larissa Cox explores and creates miniture layerd worlds hidden within the simple generic facade of a book.

Ros Blackmore
Ros Blackmore’s book features more scientific and diagnostic illustrations- an area that certainly appeals to me.

Research & Ideas
Looking into artist books has certainly given me some ideas in terms of how it might look/ come to life, but the ideas I want to potentially explore are a little difference than the ones in the artist books above.

Adaptation
little red riding hood - idk au’s have just been in my head recently lmao
grimoire nier - a companion book to the first nier game, it contains short stories, game info and other bits and bobs. despite being published in 2010, it has yet to be offically published in english, despite devoted fans translating it themselves for an online copy shared throughout the community. I think it would be really cool to try my hand at turning it into something physical.

Grimoire Nier
So, instead of just taking the fan translated Grimoire Nier book and making it physical, imma go through a slightly different route.
recounting the elements of Nier Replicant in a recording/diary/guide/idk through the character Accord- a character whos purpose it is to record and document events within the world of Nier
need to look into museums and artifact display- clinical or pitt rivers type?
i need to not stretch myself too thin, I have alot of ideas and “i could also do this…”, I should focus on anything I do create being to a high quality.
